How to Heat Your Floor on Any Budget

Installing heated floors on a budget? We’ll explain three different levels of floor heating and what to expect from each approach while keeping a budget in mind.

Heating the Essential Areas

We believe that even those on a smaller budget should experience warm floors! If your budget allows for only one or two heating mats, it is very important that you know where to place them for best results. Keep in mind that the heat will not spread far beyond the mat – about 1.5 inches past the heating wire – so you will want to place the mat exactly where you want warm floors. In a bathroom, for example, install the mat where you will stand the most, placing one or two mats directly in front of the vanity up to the toe kick.

Heating Heavy Traffic Areas

If you want to expand the heat to more than just one place in the desired room, try adding another mat! This will get you more heat in your room and an overall better experience. The number one complaint that we receive from our customers is that they wish they had heated more areas. If you decide to use two mats, we recommend laying them side by side. If you space the mats apart from each other, that open gap will not receive any heat. For example, if you heat two rooms and leave a space between the mats in the doorway, you will notice the lack of heat in that one spot. If purchasing a SunTouch TapeMat, remember that you can cut the mesh in order to make turns and cover more ground.

Heating for Optimal Heat

More is always better when it comes to floor heat! As mentioned before, our customers’ number one complaint is that they wish they heated more of their floor. Imagine walking from the toasty spot in front of the vanity to the icy floor in front of your shower. We always recommend covering as much space as you can in the room you are adding floor heat to. Also, in living rooms and other spaces with floating furniture, be sure to heat under them, such as couches and tables. If you ever want to rearrange your furniture, you’ll be glad your floor is fully heated with no cold spots.

    • Want to heat a basement area It is cold and hard to warm now. We are going to update and use for an extra bedroom and common area. Can we heat the floor with 120 or will it require us to put in 240. If that’s the case we can install different heat options

      Hi Dale,

The voltage depends on the size of the room.

For most products, you can heat up to 150 sq ft using 120V (Schluter is slightly less).

So if you’re area is 150 sq ft or less 120V can be used.

Any area above 150 sq ft will require 240V power.
